Did you know that, for a long time, the monastery of El Escorial was thought to be a door to hell ?
Legend has it that this monument, declared a World Heritage Site, was built at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama because this place is considered a gateway to the devil's abode . Thus, the sacred place would be destined precisely to cover the entrance to the underworld ... Or was there, perhaps, a more complex hidden interest?
This and other mysteries (such as that of the black dog that tormented Felipe II's rest) will be revealed to you in our free tour , which will start in the Plaza de la Constitución and will have a circular route through the darker side of the town.
* The minimum for this tour is 4 people, normally we reach this figure, otherwise we would notify you in advance.
A small town nestled in the Sierra de Guadarrama was chosen in the mid-16th century to house the Monastery of El Escorial, the greatest architectural legacy of Felipe II.
However, this building is only the best-known claim to what is possibly one of the most beautiful and interesting towns in Madrid: San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the dream paved with stories on which the powerful monarch built his great refuge.
Get to know this wonderful town with our free tour, which will cover (for around two hours) the surroundings of the monastery.
In the Plaza de San Lorenzo, near where we will start the tour, we will talk about a servant of Velázquez with very good skills ; and, from there, we will continue to the Parque de Felipe II, where this king had a run-in with a soldier.
We will cross to the Carretera de la Estación , where we will be assailed by a question: Why is the enormous building that the king ordered to be built in the shape of a grill? Our steps will take us along Floridablanca street to the Carlos III Coliseum, the oldest closed theater in Spain.
We will return to the large esplanade that surrounds the monastery to learn about the legend of the gold bricks , and we will continue to the gardens of the friars , where we will enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the place.
We will finish the tour along the Paseo de los Alamillos , looking for the mark that, according to legend, the devil himself left when he stepped on a rock, enraged because a young woman refused to blaspheme...
Come to know the history of this exciting town with us!
