'This Baeza, which they call Andalusian Salamanca' , described by Machado as 'a damp and cold town, dilapidated and gloomy, somewhere between Andalusian and La Mancha' . Just over 20 years ago, it managed to become the smallest World Heritage city in Spain.
Since the Bronze Age, civilization after civilization has been aware of the natural privilege of this city, which has meant that today it preserves a great cultural and monumental heritage as well as a very interesting history.

The old town of Baeza is so amazing that walking through its streets is like taking a trip back in time.

Baeza, known as the Royal Nest of the Hawks, has always been, since the Middle Ages, an orchard of noble houses, and therefore the epicenter of the most deeply rooted families who came to repopulate the Sacred Kingdom for the subsequent Reconquest of the rest of Andalusia. Proof of this is the impressive itinerary of palaces, ancestral residences and manor houses that still resist the passage of time and the push of the most modern architectural styles.

On this free walking tour, we will get out of the center for a while from the busy historic district, to visit the San Pablo neighborhood and the countless mansions that are located there.

The meeting point will be the Palace of Justice, the House of Corregidores and the old prison (popularly known as La Perrera), from the 16th century. From there, we will detour to Calle Concepción, with the church and the old hospital of La Purísima Concepción , and cross that street full of ancestral houses. There's the Casino Viejão , where Federico García Lorca and Antonio Machado met and had a very entertaining literary evening.

We will continue to San Pablo Street , crossing the Escalante Palace and also viewing the Tafur Palace.

Once in San Pablo, we will see the Sánchez Valenzuela Palace, the Salcedo Palace, the Casa Cabrera, the Casa Acuña , as well as countless ancestral houses and the church of San Pablo itself (front and exterior).
Further down, we will meet the Torre de los Aliatares (of Almohad origin), and Calle de las Barreras , with other Palaces such as the Garrido Palace.

We will take Calle Compañía, to see the Colegio de Santiago, of the Society of Jesus, and the Cuartel de Sementales.

We will continue for a few meters to reach the Plaza de la Santa Cruz, with the Jabalquinto Palace, the Ponce de León Palace and the church of Santa Cruz itself (we will enter Jabalquinto and Santa Cruz whenever they are open).

In Conde Romanones street we will visit the Old University (entering if the door was open) and we will continue along this street to see the Casa de los Fontecilla, the Casa de los Galeote and other 19th and 20th century mansions.

An obligatory stop is the Plaza del Pópulo , with the Old Butchers, the Audiences and Notaries, the Fountain of the Lions and the Puerta de la Azacaya and the Arco de Villalar. A beautiful Renaissance ensemble that will make you gasp in amazement (profile photo for social networks protected).

Along the Cuesta de San Gil, we will visit the Casa de las Cadenas (of the Escavias de Carvajal, patrons of the church of San Gil), to finally arrive at the Plaza de Santa María, the most beautiful square in the whole city, where they combine noble power ( Palace of the Cabrera Gil y Baile family), ecclesiastical power (cathedral and seminary) and civil power (Fuente de Santa María and high town halls, former palace of the Gil y Baile family). Finally, we will make a detour through the alleys, where we will see the Rubín de Ceballos Palace and end the tour in the Plaza de Santa María.

Two hours of the most famous architectural beauty, which I will gladly show you. This is my hometown, I've lived here all my life and no one like a farmer can show you the charm of the town he grew up in. 🙂
