Located about 2 kilometers from the coast we find the historic center of Calpe, in this small and charming old town , you can discover the history of the city of Calpe and its most beautiful corners among its labyrinth of streets and stairs.
Due to the constant threat of pirates and privateers in antiquity, the coastal populations moved away from the coast and often built fences and walled fortifications for their protection. This is the case of Calpe , which had a wall that ran around the perimeter of the old city to defend itself from pirate attacks. The ideal in the historic center of Calpe is to stroll quietly in this enchanting place to discover all its corners. We can follow the marked tourist route through the narrow and cobbled streets , the beautiful alleys full of plants and flowers , the decorated stairs or visiting the old city walls , churches and ancient Roman ruins. One of the most notable points of the historic center of Calpe is the Torreó de la Peça , located in the Plaza de la Vila , it was part of the double defensive wall with artillery pieces that defended the city in the 15th century and currently houses the Collectible Museum.
During the tour you can also visit the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, a unique parish that is also located in Plaza de la Vila, in the heart of the historic center. The Museum of History and Archeology of Calpe, located on Calle Santísimo Cristo, is the perfect place to discover the secrets of the past of this beautiful city. Along its streets we can see various murals and colorful mosaics on its walls , among which the Mural Mosaic on the facade of the tourist office stands out, the work of the painter and muralist from Alicante Gastón Castelló which represents his vision of the city of Calpe.
