Inside the caldera is a deep lake, and a crater with geothermal water. It is sometimes suitable to bathe in it although the path down to the crater is often impassable due to how steep it is. The trip it self to the Caldera is through the biggest desert of Iceland, called Ódáðahraun, along the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum.

Askja Day Tour on Private Jeep
User rating
This tour is a simply unforgettable adventure in the wild highlands. Mount Herðubreið, a majestic table mountain of a truly peculiar cake or pot shape, is the gate to the Askja area, location of two Apollo astronauts trainings in the '60, in preparation for the missions to the Moon. The dark silhouette is unmistakable even from very far away when appears in all its charm. The most precious gem of the region, though, is Askja, the caldera, a volcanic depression formed by the collapse of a magma chamber. The magnificent lunar landscape, one of the windiest and most desolate place of Iceland, is dominated by the metallic blue lake Öskjuvatn and the milky blue crater lake, Viti.

Húsavík: Bubbling Sands Snorkeling Tour
Litlaá, meaning "Little River," is located near the northern coast of Iceland. This is an unusual spot to find warm water, but thanks to a nearby geothermal active area, we get to enjoy snorkeling in water with a temperature of about 20°C. The tour takes place in a lagoon called Brunnar, meaning "Wells." The lagoon's floor is full of mesmerizing dancing sands. The cold water erupting from the bottom causes these beautiful designs described as the "Bubbling Sands" that you must see with your own eyes. Because of the warm water temperature, we also find fields of strange green algae, plants, multicolored sediments, and a countless number of snails. In the shallow rocky area at the edges of the lagoon, we find countless numbers of sticklebacks traveling around in large groups. The majestic Brown Trout eats sticklebacks and is sometimes spotted by snorkelers. This location is on the Diamond circle making it the perfect selfdrive tour.

Private Askja Caldera and Viti Crater 4x4 Tour from Lake Myvatn
On this 4x4 tour with an expert guide we head off from your pick up location in North Iceland, usually Akureyri or Lake Myvatn and travel though stunning landscapes passing glacial rivers, moutains and lava fields deep into the highlands to visit the amazing Askja volcanic area. We visit the Hrossborgir explosion crater and film location of oblivion and Gljúfrasmiður 'canyon builder' Waterfall. We then move on to Herðubreið, a flat top volcano where the beautiful Herðubreiðarlindir Springs are situated at the foot and are considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the wilderness in Iceland. We also visit the otherworldly Drekagil or 'Dragon's Gully'. Of course the highlight of the trip is the magnificant Askja Caldera in the Dyngjufjoll Mountains, it is a 50 km2 subsidence cauldron formed when an eruption caused the roof of the magma chamber in the central volcano to subside. The caldera contains Víti crater where it is sometimes possible to swim in the Summer.
